Employers shouldn't let a snow storm obscure their judgment
Severe weather conditions have affected normal operations at many Hampshire businesses, as employees have struggled to get into work.
Moore Blatch Partner and Head of Employment, Katherine Maxwell confirms that employers can use the current bad weather to strengthen relationships with employees and produce beneficial business outcomes.
She comments: “Many employees will look to employers for guidance when dealing with the current weather and its effects. Employers will need to keep an open dialogue with employees and actively manage their businesses requirements during the snow.
“With national news stories confirming the dangers of travelling, it is important for employees to try their best to get into work without placing themselves in danger,” she added.
Employers that have put in place technology and management practices which includes home working will at this time be reaping the benefits.
Katherine continues: “Whilst there is no obligation for employees to be paid, if they are not able to come to work, such a stance can be a de-motivator and alternatives should be considered by employers, especially as the inability to come to work is not within the employees direct control.
“I would encourage employers to work collaboratively with their employees and find solutions which work for their business. Where it is possible to work from home, it would seem sensible to do so, especially if there is little effect to the business,” she said.
Employers that do not have home IT in place or the routine of employees working from home need to consider what work can still be completed. Where no work can be carried out, there is the alternative of requesting employees take this time as holiday, but this could again serve as a de-motivator.
Putting in place a policy for bad weather is the ideal solution, as this lets employees know exactly where they stand and what the potential outcomes are likely to be. If there is not one in place, seeking solutions from employees so that they are a part of the process may motivate them to work harder on their return.
Katherine concludes: “The important point to remember is that all businesses have been affected to some extent by the weather, which means that clients and customers will have reasonable expectations. With this in mind, it is important that employers use a negative circumstance to produce a positive outcome for their business.”
